Tuesday, July 11, 2006 - Broken server pt 2
My dev server at work is now working properly again (probably just until tomorrow morning). It turns out that because my windows account (and therefore remote login to the server) was on a different domain to the server itself our new and all-singing-all-dancing network security stuff was removing me from the server's admin group.
This has now been fixed by the server team adding me to the domain that my dev server resides in. This was always going to happen as a matter of course but this just brought it forward.
Just to re-enforce a notion that we are all too familiar with but either forget or ignore far too often:
Communication is vital to the success of the business.
Somebody upstairs decided that the new system would be good and that it should be implemented. Yes from a security point of view it is good and it works but without considering the side-effects and without communicating the plan to other teams for feed-back before or during the implementation it has cost us 3 days of trying to fix something that wasn't actually broken because we had not been told about the new security implementation.
